The Goal of God’s Economy

The Universal Romance—the Spirit and the Bride Additionally, the New Jerusalem is the bride of Christ. In Revelation 21:2, John says,

And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Revelation 21:9 also refers to the New Jerusalem as “the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” Throughout time, God has always considered His people as His wife (Isaiah 54:5; Jeremiah 31:32; Matthew 9:15; John 3:29; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:31-32). All of God’s Old Testament and New Testament believers together will eventually become the universal wife of Christ. The Triune God and His people will live together as a universal, divine couple for eternity.

The Triune God and His people will live together as a universal, divine couple for eternity.

How can this corporate human bride marry God, a divine Person? Such a union is possible because she has received His divine life and nature (1 John 5:12; 2 Peter 1:4), thus qualifying her to match God as His counterpart. Conversely, through the process of incarnation the Triune God now possesses humanity and is likewise able to join Himself to her. The Husband of this mystical universal couple is divine yet human; the wife is human yet divine.

Finally, according to Revelation 22:17, “the Spirit and the bride say, Come!” The Spirit here is the processed and consummated Triune God; the bride is the redeemed, regenerated, transformed, and glorified corporate man. These two will enjoy a glorious married life for eternity, for the satisfaction of God’s heart’s desire.
